The Top 10 Things to Do When You’re Bored at Work

Boredom is terrifying…anytime. But supposing you’re bored at that  ideal job (or promotion) you just got? What to do? Here are a few tips for making the most of your time.

1. Make friends.
Even though you may be bored with a feeling of inertia, build  your network of professional and personal contacts.

2. Stay aware.
Keep your antennae up for changes within your company or  industry that may present an opportunity for you to use your  department or skills for higher visibility.

3. Manage your boss.
Deliver your work and creativity on time. Don’t give your boss  a chance to ax you before you’re ready to move on.

4. Take inventory.
This is a good time to list your strengths and weaknesses.  Evaluate if there is an opportunity for you to lessen a weakness so  you can create a new strength.

5. Educate others.
You can take this chance to teach others what you know. The fine line is in doing it with finesse so that they do not become  defensive in the process. Start small. Let people pick your brain.

6. Learn something new.
Instead of wasting your time daydreaming or angry, sit at your desk and learn something new that is either related or unrelated to  your new job. Be subtle.

7. Reorganize your time.
Maybe the job doesn’t require intensive attention on your part,  so relax at it while paying more attention to the details that may  make you shine in some way.

8. Get Top Ten Lists for others.
If your team or department is working on a particular project,  obtain Top 10 Lists that may be helpful and that you believe in  without seeming like a know-it-all.

9. Offer your team.
Making your group visible and higher-profile creates momentum that results in new projects of more interest. Letting people know  you’re there helps move things into another realm. Break out of the  stereotype.

10. Cut your losses and split.
When all else fails, let go and move on. Sometimes there’s just nothing you can do to make things any better. Don’t beat yourself up,  just get going!
